The Moonfleet 36 is a quintessential example of the "heavy metal" era of British yacht building, a period defined by a transition from traditional timber craftsmanship to the burgeoning possibilities of glassreinforced plastic (GRP). Designed by the prolific and respected naval architect Alan Pape and constructed by Moonfleet Marine in Weymouth, England, the 36 was conceived as a rugged, goanywhere bluewater cruiser. While Moonfleet Marine is perhaps more widely recognized for its highperformance classic runabouts and motor cruisers, their foray into the 36foot sailing market produced a vessel of immense structural integrity and traditional aesthetic appeal. Built primarily in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Moonfleet 36 was aimed at the serious offshore sailor who valued seakindliness and safety over the burgeoning trend toward lightweight, finkeeled production racers.
