Minicat 420 Buyer's Guide
The Minicat 420 is the most popular and most versatile model from Czech builder Minicat, a 13.8-foot inflatable catamaran that breaks down into two car-stowable bags. On the used market you will find a spread of trim levels from the simple Instinct to the carbon-equipped Evoque and numbered special editions, all sharing the same portable frame-and-float concept.
Layouts on the Used Market
Every 420 uses a powder-coated aluminum frame with two inflatable Heytex tubes and a central woven trampoline about 6.2 by 4.4 feet; some later editions add a front trampoline. The Instinct is the entry layout with boomless Dacron main and aluminum rudder. The Emotion adds a Mylar main with aluminum boom and better upwind trim. The Evoque brings black trampoline and carbon rudder, bowsprit, and boom. The Laura Dekker and 20th Anniversary specials are based on the Evoque with carbon laminate sails, traveler, and — on the Anniversary — wheeled bags and a numbered plaque; only 20 of that last edition exist.
Equipment and Common Upgrades
Buyers should focus on a few consequence items rather than cosmetics. Power and energy: most models take an optional motor mount, useful for docking aid. Sail handling: a continuous-line jib furler is standard, and an optional 10.5 m² Code-Zero gennaker improves light-air reach; the Emotion and up add boom with outhaul and vang, while Laura Dekker and Anniversary boats include a traveler. Navigation and comfort: the Anniversary edition carries Dyneema shrouds and a windvane as standard; trapeze is an owner-fitted option on most.
What to Inspect
The floats are single-chamber with a combined load capacity of 530 kg anchor; check the Heytex surfaces for abrasion or puncture since there is no redundant buoyancy. Verify the welded flag pockets on the tubes and the aluminum frame powder coat for corrosion at joints. Confirm the centerline rudder automatic cleat releases and the 90-degree raise lock works anchor. On Emotion and premium mains, inspect the transparent monofilm for clouding or crazing.
Availability and Buyer's Takeaway
Used Minicat 420 boats are found through normal brokerage and private channels. For a used 420, check:
- Float condition and single-chamber integrity
- Frame flag pockets and powder-coat corrosion
- Rudder release and raise-lock function
- Trim-specific sail film and included traveler/gennaker
- Bag hardware and whether wheeled bags are present on Anniversary models
