The Menger Cat 15, debuting in 2001, is a quintessential example of the fiberglass catboat revival that began in the mid1970s. Designed by the fatherandson team of Bill and Andrew Menger, this 15foot vessel was envisioned as a robust, traditionallooking daysailer capable of navigating the shallow, shoaly waters of Long Island’s Great South Bay. Built by Menger Boatworks until the company closed its doors in 2004, the design’s legacy continues today through Thompson Boatworks, which produces the model as the Thom Cat 15 using the original Menger molds. The boat is distinguished by its extreme beamtolength ratio—spanning 7 feet across its 15foot hull—giving it the footprint and initial stability of a much larger vessel while remaining easily trailerable.
