Designed by the legendary Swedish Olympic medalist and naval architect Pelle Petterson, the Maxi Racer (often referred to as the Maxi 80 Racer) was introduced in 1979 as a direct Scandinavian response to the global explosion of the J/24. Built by Mölnlycke Marin (Maxi Yachts) until production concluded in 1983, the vessel represented a radical departure from Petterson’s highly successful but conservative, highvolume cruising designs like the Maxi 77. The Maxi Racer was conceived to capture the burgeoning "sportsboat" market of the era, trading cruising amenities and standing headroom for a sleek, lowprofile flush deck, a highly tunable rig, and planing potential. In Scandinavia—particularly along the Swedish west coast—the model quickly developed into a fierce, strictly managed onedesign racing class, locking horns with its prime contemporary rival, Peter Norlin’s Albin Express.
