Originally conceived as rugged, flatbottomed fishing vessels designed to navigate the shallow, treacherous shoals of the Dutch Zuiderzee, the Lemsteraak has evolved over the last halfcentury into the pinnacle of Dutch sailing prestige. Among these traditional leeboard craft, the Lemsteraak Woelwater stands as a landmark vessel. Commissioned in 1999 as sail number VA150, Woelwater is a custombuilt 14.32meter "Roefaak" (cabinstyle) variant designed by Andre Hoek of Hoek Naval Architects. Constructed with a robust steel hull by the master metalworkers at the Eeltje Cuperus yard in Makkum, her woodwork was executed by the legendary Claasen Jachtbouw in Zaandam, and her complex mechanical systems were engineered by Cornelis Jongkind.
