Historically, these ships were designed to transport mussel seeds from the northern shallows to the southern oyster and mussel beds in Zeeland. As a "Mosselaak" variant, this model is distinguished from the standard yachtstyle Lemsteraak by a broader beam and a fuller stern, which provided the necessary displacement to carry heavy cargo while maintaining a shallow draft for navigating tidal flats.
