Introduced in 1989, the JY 15 was conceived by naval architect Rod Johnstone—the cofounder of J/Boats—as a highperformance yet userfriendly alternative to traditional sailing dinghies of the era, such as the Club 420, the Flying Junior, or the Lightning. Johnstone’s vision was to merge the thrilling, planing performance of a racing dinghy with the stability, volume, and simplicity required for recreational family daysailing. The result was a 15foot hull that went on to become a staple of collegiate racing, community sailing schools, and onedesign fleets across North America. To achieve its target durability, early production of the JY 15 pioneered the use of a thermoformed composite hull, a departure from traditional gelcoated fiberglass that would define the model’s character and maintenance profile for decades.
