The Irwin 37 Mark IV (often designated as the 374) represents a defining era in American production boatbuilding. Introduced by Ted Irwin of Floridabased Irwin Yachts in 1977 and produced through 1982, the model was conceived to deliver maximum accommodation volume and livability for the dollar. At a time when competitors were designing narrower, deeperdraft cruisers, Irwin focused heavily on comfort at anchor, creating a centercockpit layout that rivaled the interior space of much larger vessels. Often likened to the "Chevrolet Bel Air" of the cruising world, the Irwin 374 targeted coastal cruisers, liveaboards, and families seeking an affordable, forgiving platform to explore the Intracoastal Waterway and the shallow waters of the Bahamas. While purists of the era criticized the builder's productionline shortcuts and cosmetic finish, the sheer volume of hulls sold proved that the design answered a massive market demand for accessible, comfortable cruising.
