The International 5.5 Metre class represents one of the most intellectually stimulating and hydrodynamically refined arenas in the history of yacht racing. Conceived in 1949 by the legendary British yacht designer Charles E. Nicholson, the class was engineered under a modified version of the International Rule to provide an elite, tactically demanding keelboat racing experience at a fraction of the cost of the larger and increasingly costprohibitive International 6 Metre 2. Nicholson’s design brief succeeded spectacularly; by shaving off half the displacement and half the sail area of the 6 Metre, he birthed a highly responsive, elegant, and athletic racer that immediately captured the imagination of the global sailing establishment. The class earned Olympic status in time for the 1952 Helsinki Games and remained the pinnacle of Olympic developmentclass sailing until 1968. Though it eventually yielded its Olympic rings to strict onedesign classes, the 5.5 Metre never lost its luster. Today, it remains an active international development class where naval architects, composite specialists, and worldclass sailors continuously push the boundaries of keelboat design, resulting in a fascinating fleet where historic wooden gems and stateoftheart carbonfiber machines compete on equal terms under a beautifully balanced rating formula.
