Introduced in 1964 by the Cape Cod Shipbuilding Company of Wareham, Massachusetts, the Herreshoff H26 was conceived as a robust, fiberglass pocket cruiser with the elegant lines and timeless handling of a classic New England daysailer. In the midtwentieth century, as fiberglass revolutionized the marine industry, recreational sailors sought a vessel that could transition from afternoon daysailing in Buzzards Bay to weekend family cruising, without sacrificing the pedigree of the Golden Age of sail. This desire prompted a collaborative effort between Gordon Goodwin of Cape Cod Shipbuilding and Sidney and Halsey Chase Herreshoff to scale up the 18foot Herreshoff Goldeneye—which itself was an evolution of Nathanael Greene Herreshoff’s legendary 1914 H12 1/2. The result was the H26, a traditional, fullkeeled yacht that packed the grace of its wooden ancestors into a lowmaintenance, seaworthy fiberglass hull.
