The Herreshoff Bar Harbor 31 (BH31) represents one of the most refined expressions of the "Golden Age" of yachting, a period where the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company dominated the design of onedesign classes for the American elite. Commissioned in 1903 by members of the Mount Desert Yacht Club in Maine, the class was designed by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff as a fast, seaworthy racercruiser capable of handling the challenging conditions of the New England coast. While the "31" in its name refers to its 31foot waterline length, the vessel’s dramatic overhangs result in a striking overall length of approximately 49 feet. Only 13 of these hulls were built between 1903 and 1904, and they are today considered some of the most soughtafter prizes in the classic wooden boat community.
