The Discovery 47 represents a historic milestone in North American yacht design, capturing a transitional era when offshore racing and longdistance cruising began to merge with modern fiberglass construction. Launched in 1969, this 47foot cruising yacht was designed by the esteemed Canadian naval architect Peter S. Hatfield. Hatfield, who honed his skills at Sparkman & Stephens before establishing his own practice in Vancouver, British Columbia, was at the forefront of the Pacific Northwest design revolution. His work on the legendary ocean racer Porpoise III—the first yacht in North America to feature a fully foamcored hull—informed the design of the Discovery 47. Built by toptier regional fabricators such as Petersen's Fiberglas Boats and ICL Engineering, the Discovery 47 was built to withstand the challenging conditions of the Salish Sea and the open Pacific. The vessel was engineered for demanding sailors who refused to compromise on structural integrity, presenting a stark contrast to the massmarket, highvolume production boats of the era.
