The Columbia 24 was the vessel that effectively catalyzed the transition of Glas Laminates into the powerhouse known as Columbia Yachts. Launched in 1961, it was based on the wooden Catalina Islander 24 designed by Joseph McGlasson. While the early fiberglass hulls produced by Dick Valdes’s team actually featured the woodgrain imprint of the original planking (sold as the Islander 24), the Columbia 24 was refined with a smoothsurfaced mold, signaling a more modern, industrial approach to yacht construction. This model, along with its siblings, helped define the "pocket cruiser" category, offering a relatively affordable entry point for families during the postwar recreational boating boom. Historical archives from the Columbia Yacht Owners Association indicate that the 24 was instrumental in proving that fiberglass could provide the durability and internal volume necessary for a true cruising experience in a small footprint.
