The Catalina 21—known in its various production eras as the Victory 21, Capri Victory 21, or simply the Catalina Victory—holds a unique place in fiberglass yachting history as the boat that catalyzed the career of legendary builder Frank Butler and laid the cornerstone for Catalina Yachts. Originally penned by naval architect Ted Carpentier in 1959, the elegant, narrowbeamed daysailer was initially produced by Henry R. McCune. When McCune went bankrupt, Butler, who had loaned him money to complete his own boat, took over the tooling and started Wesco Marine. This corporate lineage eventually transitioned into Coronado Yachts and, by 1970, Catalina Yachts, which acquired the manufacturing rights and marketed the boat under its own marquee. The design was intended to serve as a fast, accessible, and trailerable onedesign club racer and harbor daysailer. This distinguished it from the wider, highvolume pocket cruisers like the later Catalina 22, which prioritized interior volume and family cruising.
