The Beneteau R/C 35—known widely in European markets simply as the First 35—is a seminal cruiserracer that marked a key transitional period for the French shipbuilding giant. Launched in 1980 under the drafting pen of naval architect Jean Berret, the R/C 35 was engineered to dominate the highly competitive International Offshore Rule (IOR) threequarterton racing class without sacrificing the accommodations expected of a family coastal cruiser. Berret succeeded in creating a hull that was both a formidable club racer and a comfortable cruiser, a dualpurpose philosophy that became the hallmark of Beneteau’s celebrated First line. This design was so structurally efficient and popular that Beneteau later used the exact same underwater hull form for their dedicated cruising model, the Idylle 11.50. Today, the R/C 35 is remembered as an innovative, highvolume pioneer that challenged traditional notions of interior space and lightdisplacement performance in a thirtyfivefoot envelope.
