In the early 1980s, Bénéteau found itself at a crossroads. While its performanceoriented First series was dominating the European cruiserracer market and turning heads on the International Offshore Rule (IOR) racing circuit, there remained a segment of traditional cruising sailors who demanded heavyweather capability, predictable handling, and longterm comfort over racing silverware. To capture this audience, the French shipyard introduced the Idylle series. Positioned as the flagship of this cruiserfirst lineup, the Bénéteau Idylle 1350 (also known as the Idylle 13.50) was launched in 1983. Conceived through a collaboration with the legendary Argentine naval architect Germán Frers, the yacht combined a highly refined hull form with a robust build philosophy that stood in stark contrast to the lightweight production models that followed in later decades.
