Design and Construction
Roberto Biscontini’s America’s Cup background produced a balanced hull form with the center of buoyancy aligned on the center of effort, a plumb bow, vertical transom, and a low coachroof. The hull is cored with balsa and built by infused construction, with fiberglass stringers fixed to an aluminum substructure to maximize rigidity under keel and rig loads. Each yacht is built on a semi-custom basis, and the deck and hull are cored and infused with solid glass wherever hardware mounts. Outboard chainplates, Dyneema lifelines, and light furniture all speak to a weight-saving ethos, while an inner hull liner takes up loads from the mast, chainplates, and engine. The standard keel is an 8-foot-2-inch cast-iron T-keel, with a shoal 6-foot-3-inch option and a 9-foot-10-inch lead-bulb performance T-keel available; twin rudders keep her controllable at any angle of heel.
Rig and Handling
The standard rig is a deck-stepped, triple-spreader Lorima aluminum mast towering 85 feet, with a performance carbon spar option adding air draft to 88 feet. The standard sailplan spreads 1,785 square feet between a 105-percent genoa and main, and a fixed composite sprit forward lets you hoist a Code 0 or full spinnaker off the wind. A split mainsail track halves the flaked luff height, headsail sheets track tightly to either side of the mast, and a battery of Harken Performa electric winches manages both sails. There is no traveler; the mainsheet runs through a centerline block just forward of the wheels. Writing in SAIL Magazine, the test crew found her sensationally responsive, accelerating in an instant and as lively as a dinghy, slipping along at 6.5 knots in 8.7 knots of true wind at 55 degrees apparent, and holding 5.5 knots to 35 degrees apparent before dropping to 3 knots beam-reaching in sub-6-knot air under working sails alone.
Accommodations
Below, the saloon opens into a formal dinette to port and a lounge to starboard, with white lacquered bulkheads, teak sole, and molded wood furniture keeping things bright. The standard three-cabin, two-head layout places the master suite forward with a 5-foot-3-inch island berth and split head; two aft double berths share a head. A three-cabin, three-head version grants private shower rooms per cabin. The galley is a highly customizable L-shape (or U-shape with good offshore bracing), and the cockpit splits into working twin helms and a social salon ahead of the wheels, with paired side tables preserving a clear central aisle. A lifting transom becomes a swim platform and hides a tender garage holding an 8-foot inflated RIB or 9-foot deflated one.
Equipment and Deck Layout
Twin angled binnacles carry carbon wheels and 12-inch B&G displays, with engine controls atop each for easy docking and B&G 20/20 mast displays visible from the helms. All lines, including the double-ended mainsheet, run under deck panels to the helms; the genoa furler sits belowdecks and hatches are flush. The SEANAPPS and Ship Control systems let owners manage lights and systems by smartphone. The wide transom and free-flowing deck plan give crew room to work sails, with sturdy centerline handholds and bulwark-raised lifelines around the quarters.
Propulsion and Performance Under Power
Standard propulsion is an 80 hp Yanmar with saildrive; the test boat carried an optional 110 hp turbo diesel on a straight shaft with a Flexofold folder and a retractable Sidepower bow thruster. Wide-open she touched 9.6 knots at 3,400 rpm, while a relaxed 8.7-knot cruise at 2,200 rpm burned roughly 1.5 gallons per hour. Reduced tankage—106 gallons fuel, 190 water—reflects the priority on sailing weight over long motoring range.
The Verdict
The First Yacht 53 is a thoroughly modern performance cruiser that delivers dinghy-like helm feedback in a 56-foot luxury package, with a semi-custom interior and a genuinely clever deck engineered for short-handed speed. She is not a long-range motor-sailer, and her reduced tankage and beam-aft hull ask the owner to embrace sailing first.
