The Baron 76, designed by the respected Soviet naval architect Oleg Larionov, is a compelling artifact of Eastern European maritime history that successfully bridged the gap between the rigid, statecontrolled sports programs of the Baltic and the competitive Western European sailing scene. Developed in the early 1980s and produced from 1983 through 1992, the Baron 76 was conceived primarily as a highperformance Quarter Ton racer under the International Offshore Rule (IOR). To understand the vessel’s heritage is to understand its multiple identities: in Estonia, where it was built, it is known affectionately as the Polaris (after the original prototype); in Russian racing fleets, it was designated the CT25; and in Western European markets like Germany, it was marketed under the names Baron 76, Race 77, and Z80 following a series of export pushes in the early 1990s.
