The late 1970s and early 1980s represented a golden age for the trailerable pocket cruiser, characterized by a rapid expansion of fiberglass boat building and an eager market of middleclass sailors seeking weekend adventures. Within this landscape, Coastal Recreation, Inc. of Costa Mesa, California, established a formidable reputation, largely driven by the stout, traditional, swingkeel designs of Lyle Hess, such as the Balboa 20 and Balboa 26 2. However, by 1981, as the marine industry navigated shifting economic climates and corporate transitions, Coastal Recreation introduced the Balboa 24. Designed by the design team of W. Shad Turner and William Downing, the Balboa 24 was a direct development of the 1980 Laguna 24S. It was built during a pivotal period when Laguna Yachts bought out Coastal Recreation, resulting in a boat that combined the structural intent of the Balboa nameplate with Turner’s signature performanceoriented, cleanwaterline hull design.
