The Aqua Cat 12.5 represents a significant chapter in the evolution of American beach catamarans, serving as a precursor to the explosive popularity of the Hobie class in the late 1960s and 1970s. Manufactured by American Fiberglass Corporation, the Aqua Cat 12.5 was designed as a lightweight, easily transportable, and exceptionally stable platform for recreational sailors. Unlike the more aggressive, bananahulled designs that followed, the Aqua Cat features symmetrical, Vshaped hulls that provide a predictable ride even in choppy coastal waters. Its hallmark is a colorful nylon trampoline and a simple, unstayed or minimallystayed rig that allows for rapid assembly on a beach or boat ramp. The model was often marketed to families and beginners who desired the speed of a multihull without the steep learning curve or the tendency for "pitchpoling" associated with more extreme racing designs.
