The 1960s was an era of intense experimentation in recreational sailing, marked by the rapid adoption of fiberglass and the birth of the modern multhull. While the iconic Hobie 14, introduced in late 1968, is widely credited with igniting the beach catamaran craze, a lesserknown but highly advanced pioneer arrived on the scene four years earlier: the Alcort Catfish. Introduced in 1964 by Alcort, Inc.—the Connecticutbased builder already worldfamous for its Sailfish and Sunfish monohull board boats—the Catfish was a bold attempt to capture the emerging multihull market. Designed by naval architect George Patterson, the Catfish combined highperformance catamaran engineering with the comfort and userfriendly accessibility that defined Alcort’s brand.
