The Red Admiral 36 represents a fascinating chapter in British yachting history from the late 1970s and early 1980s. Designed in 1978 by the renowned partnership of Holman & Pye, this 36foot racercruiser was originally conceived to serve as a fast offshore contender, specifically targeting participation in the legendary and ultimately infamous 1979 Fastnet Race. Though the design team and builders intended for a larger fleet to make the start line, significant construction delays meant only a single hull—named Autonomy—actually competed in the stormbattered 1979 race. There, it famously proved the seaworthiness of the design by surviving the historic gale and making a safe, controlled landfall. In total, only 22 examples of this handmolded design were produced between 1979 and 1984.
