That means a used Yamaha's actual pedigree hangs on which model a buyer is looking at, not on the Yamaha name by itself — the real diligence is confirming which design lineage a given hull represents, weighed against the boat's condition rather than assumed from the brand.

Which era to target

The clearest example is the Yamaha 28, introduced in 1976 under a Groupe Finot commission: Yamaha picked Finot for contract work, and the French firm pitched a conventional concept alongside a bolder one, with Yamaha signing off on the bolder route. That 1976 boat paired a counter-molded fiberglass hull with a balsa-cored deck, alloy spars, and a small Yamaha diesel inboard — specifics a buyer can check a hull against. Earlier in the company's design history came a run of in-house Japanese cabin cruisers at 20 and 25 feet, plus a separate Scampi model credited to Norlin — an earlier phase, before Yamaha began naming outside naval architects on contract.

Yamaha's fuller sailboat catalog ran from smaller day-sailers up through the 37-foot range, built across the mid-1970s into the early 1980s. Treat the full model directory on this page as the reference for a given hull's size and vintage, then confirm that boat's actual designer and builder independently — a Yamaha nameplate spans in-house work, a Finot commission, and a Norlin credit, so it doesn't by itself establish which one a listing represents, and the size and year alone won't tell you either.
