Buying a used Weta: it's the generation that matters, not the model

A used Weta is a boat you're buying into a one-design racing class, not a lineup of differently sized models. That flips the usual used-boat homework: the question isn't which Weta suits you, it's which generation of the design a given hull is — because the boat changed meaningfully across its production run, and those differences are exactly what a buyer needs to identify before comparing price or condition.

Which era to target

The Weta's structure has held a consistent split throughout its run: a pricier carbon-fiber mast and sprit sit above a foam-cored, E-glass hull, daggerboard, and rudder — the cheaper materials doing the bulk of the boat's surface area. That layup is vacuum-bagged under tight resin control, a build method aimed at avoiding sloppy glasswork in hard-to-reach areas. What changed generation to generation sits on top of that baseline. Early hulls carried float flanges that were later removed to save weight. The rudders were improved and the daggerboards lengthened. The boomless mainsail — made by windsurfer sailmaker Gaastra, with tubular battens controlling draft instead of a conventional boom — moved from a pin-head shape to a squared-top. And the jib became self-tacking. None of these changes carry a firm year, so identify a hull's generation by its features rather than a model date: flanged or flangeless hull, original or lengthened daggerboard, pin-head or square-top main, and whether the jib self-tacks.
