Buying a used Varianta: two very different boats under one name

A boat listed as a Varianta could be either of two unrelated designs built decades apart, so the name itself tells a buyer almost nothing about what they are looking at. One is a small 1960s-70s German cruiser-racer built in large numbers with a long-established class scene behind it; the other is a modern, stripped-out yacht built on proven Hanse production tooling. Working out which one a listing describes — model number and build year, not the badge — is the first job.

Which era to target

The original Varianta line ran from 1966 to 1982 and totaled roughly 4,500 boats across the K3, the four-berth K4 that followed a year after launch, and the larger-coamed Varianta 65 of 1972 — a production run large enough that it stood as Germany's best-selling cabin cruiser, and built up a genuine owners' and racing-class network almost from the start. The revival line — Varianta 18, 37, and 44 — arrived far later, from late 2009 through 2012, under Dehler as a HanseYachts Group brand, and represents a completely different proposition: mainstream production-yacht engineering with the fit-out deliberately pared back to hold down the price.

The revival's clearest selling point is the Varianta 37's parentage: it rides on Hanse 370/375 tooling — that boat's hull, a reworked deck, its deep cast-iron T-keel, and its spade rudder — so a buyer is effectively looking at proven Hanse underpinnings with the interior pared back, rather than an unknown, low-volume design. The full model directory on this page breaks out the 18, 37, and 44 individually, alongside the earlier K-series and 65 — worth checking against a listing's actual model and year before assuming which line, and which era, it belongs to.
