Buying a used Spirit: figure out which builder made it before anything else

A listing for a used "Spirit" could be describing any of three boats that have nothing to do with each other: a compact 1970s American daysailer, a Belgian offshore racer from the same decade, or a modern custom yacht from an English yard working in wood and epoxy. These aren't variations on a theme the way most makes are - they don't share a designer, a construction method, or even a home continent, only a name that three separate companies happened to land on independently. Before weighing condition, rigging, or anything else in a listing, a buyer has to establish which of the three built the hull in question; comparing an American Spirit 21 against a Belgian Spirit 32 tells a buyer nothing useful, because they were never in competition with each other to begin with.

Which era to target

The American line is the shortest search: Glastron only built Spirit-badged boats between 1970 and 1981, moving from the renamed North American 23 through the Spirit 21 to the Spirit 28, the line's final and biggest boat, produced right up to the company's exit from sailboats. The Belgian line runs longer and later - Van Heygen built the 29 into the late 1980s, the 32 into the mid-1990s, and the 36, 37, and 41 followed into the 1990s - so a Belgian Spirit search covers roughly two more decades than an American one. Spirit Yachts of Ipswich spans the widest window of all: founded in 1993 with a single 37-footer, the yard's range had grown to 46-to-130-foot yachts within two decades, meaning an early-1990s Spirit and a 2010s Spirit represent very different points in the builder's own development, not just different sizes.

Beyond era, the three lines point toward different kinds of ownership entirely. The American boats are small, single-design-era coastal cruisers built to 1970s production-fiberglass standards. The Belgian boats carry an offshore-racing pedigree - Quarter Ton Cup lineage and a documented history of podium finishes - that suits a buyer after performance over creature comforts. And the English yard's wood-epoxy construction puts its boats in a different category of ownership altogether, closer to custom yacht work than production sailboat buying. None of this shows up cleanly in a model number alone, so cross-checking a listing against the right line - not just the right size - is the real first step. The full model directory on this page organizes the lineup by builder for exactly that reason.
