Buying a used Soverel: one yard, two design eras to sort out

A used Soverel is really two different boats sharing a badge. Soverel Marine, the North Palm Beach, Florida yard that built every boat carrying the name, put out an earlier generation of cruising and MORC-racing designs drawn by founder Bill Soverel, and a later generation of lighter race boats designed by his son Mark. That's a design-era distinction more than a condition question, and knowing which one a listing is belongs at the front of any evaluation — a Soverel bought for cruising comfort and a Soverel bought to win races were never meant to be the same boat.

Which era to target

Bill Soverel's own designs sit earlier in the company's run — boats like the 28, 30, 36, 37, 38, 41, and 48 — from a self-taught designer who backed his own drafting with results on the water: his Soverel 30 repeated a Block Island Week MORC win in 1971 that it had first taken in 1969. Mark Soverel's race-boat era came later and ran narrower: the 26 and, above all, the 33, an ultralight production-racer launched in 1983. Mark himself, quoted in Sailing World, put the design philosophy behind that era bluntly — "we build em light to win races, not save lives" — a useful caution for anyone weighing a Soverel race boat against a cruising one. Mark's own run building boats ended when the 1980s industry recession pushed him toward a second career in real estate development, a natural cutoff for dating a Soverel by builder rather than by hull number.

What to inspect across the range

The best-documented model in the record is the Soverel 33, and its known issues are worth checking regardless of which of its four builders produced a given hull. Early hulls left the factory prone to oilcanning forward of the main bulkhead; Mark Soverel supplied a technical bulletin outlining how to add hull stiffeners to correct it, and hulls built after #16 received two vertical stiffeners in the bow from the factory going forward. Decks cored with balsa or foam in the chainplate area lacked the shear strength for the loads involved, and a heavily loaded chainplate could creep inward as a result — boats built at the Tartan factory got extra lamination in that area to compensate. Mark Soverel himself, quoted in Practical Sailor, called the chainplate repair straightforward: removing the chainplate, cutting out the coring, and relaminating with solid glass. The engine box, meanwhile, is built of lightweight fiberglass that provides little sound deadening — worth factoring into a sea trial no matter which of the four yards built the hull.

Sorting a used Soverel starts with builder and era rather than model number alone: a cruising-era hull from Bill Soverel's own Florida plant is a different boat, for a different kind of buyer, than one of Mark's race boats built later at Republic Boats, George Olson's Pacific Yachts, or Tartan. The 33 alone came from four separate yards across three states, so confirming which one built a specific hull says as much about finish and construction detail as the model name does. The full model directory on this page breaks the lineup down by year and builder.
