Buying a used Shogun: a two-model brand, not a proven production run

A used Shogun on the market is one of just two hull types from a production history barely half a decade old — the Shogun 50, the brand's original design launched in 2019, or the Shogun 43, which only entered series production in 2023. That youth changes what a buyer is weighing: there is little secondhand-market history to draw on, and the boats were built in vacuum-infused carbon fiber by a rotating cast of Swedish specialist companies rather than one long-running production line, so verifying which yard and which build number produced a specific hull matters more than it would with an established marque. Both models share the same design partnership between Håkan and Oscar Södergren, so a buyer is effectively evaluating one design philosophy across two sizes rather than choosing among distinct product lines.

Which era to target

The Shogun 50 was Bergryd's original commission, built around the ClubSwan 50 he already owned but fitted with a keel of variable draught; it had not been followed by a sister hull through mid-2023. The Shogun 43 came later — first sailed in spring 2023 and only then moving into series production, with build number 3 out of the resin tank by July 2023; around that same early stage, Yachting World reported three further hulls already sold and in production. That is still an early, low-volume run rather than a mature production model. A used Shogun 43 is almost certainly a very recent boat, built after a demanding first hull that alone took roughly 7,000 hours to complete.

What to inspect across the range

Yachting World's test of the Shogun 43 flagged handling traits tied directly to the boat's low-freeboard, performance-first hull: a tendency to bury the bows in a leftover swell, and a wetter ride than the wind-driven wave state alone would suggest. Both trace to the same design choice — a narrow, low-freeboard hull built for speed — so a buyer should weigh it as a characteristic of the type rather than a fault on one hull, and should have any carbon structural work and the linen-fiber interior joinery reviewed by a specialist familiar with the build, since neither is routine yard work.

The two models sit at different ends of the range: the 50 is Bergryd's original, effectively one-off design, while the 43 is the boat that went into series production and is more likely to turn up for sale in any number.
