Buying a used Seascape: know which side of the Beneteau rebrand a hull sits on

A used Seascape isn't simply a used Seascape — the brand's history splits cleanly at 2018, when Groupe Beneteau took majority ownership and folded the range into its First line. Buying here means first placing a given hull relative to that split: an original Seascape-badged boat, its First-badged continuation, or a wholly newer model launched under Beneteau after the split. Each represents a different relationship to the brand's Slovenian, Sam Manuard-designed roots, and condition should be weighed against that context rather than against brand name alone.

Which era to target

The clearest line runs through the acquisition itself. Before July 2018, the yard built the Seascape 14, 18, 24, and 27 to naval architect Sam Manuard's plans — compact, trailerable cruisers pared back to the essentials — that, by late that year, spanned 14 to 27 feet. After Groupe Beneteau took its 60 percent stake, those same hulls carried on under the First badge, with production of the 14 and 24 staying put at the original Jesenice, Slovenia plant — so a name change on the transom doesn't mean a different boat behind it. A separate distinction applies further out: the First 36 (launched 2023, with a Transpac-capable 36SE variant) and the First 30 (2025) came later still, as fresh designs the Beneteau and Seascape teams worked out together rather than updates to any prior hull — don't expect Seascape-era tooling or history to carry over to either.

Navigating the lineup

Within the original Seascape-badged and rebadged First 14–27 range, size does most of the work: the 14 and 18 sit at the compact, most trailerable end, while the 24 and 27 add cabin space without giving up the swing-keel, twin-rudder beachability that defined the line. The First 36 and First 30 sit apart from that group entirely — newer, larger, and built around a higher level of comfort and finish than the original Seascapes, by the developing team's own account — so a buyer choosing between an original-era hull and one of the newer First designs is really choosing between two boats from two different design eras.
