Buying a used Seamaster: confirm which builder first

A "Seamaster" nameplate doesn't identify one company. Before weighing condition, size, or era the way a buyer would with any other used sailboat, it's worth establishing which of two entirely separate builders produced a given hull: Seamaster Ltd. of Great Dunmow, Essex, or the unrelated Taiwan yard behind the Seamaster 46 and 47. Mixing the two up means mixing up their construction, their designers, and their history — none of which overlaps.

Which era to target

The Essex-built range spans the working life of Seamaster Ltd., a yard that began in GRP motorboats in the 1950s before turning to sailing yachts, leaning on Laurent Giles for its earlier, more traditional lines and moving to Holman & Pye once the range grew: the 925 dates to 1972, and the 815, added in 1975, ran until the company's 1981 close. Any Essex-built Seamaster on the market today comes from that closed window, with no later factory-refreshed generation to check it against. The Seamaster 46 belongs to an entirely different era and lineage: a cruising ketch drawn up by the American designer Robert Perry and produced from around 1981 by the Taiwanese yard Lien Hwa Industrial Corp. — a boat that borrowed the Seamaster name rather than any pedigree from Dunmow.

Within the Essex-built line, size is the practical axis: the range runs from roughly 19 feet up to just under 30 feet, with a documented choice of iron fin keel or twin iron bilge keels on at least the Sailer 815 — worth checking against a given hull's history for shallow-water sailing plans. A buyer drawn to the larger Seamaster 46 or 47 is shopping a different boat altogether, with no design or construction relationship to the smaller Essex-built range, so it's worth treating that pairing as two separate searches rather than one lineup. The full model directory on this page breaks out the range for closer comparison.
