Buying a used Seal: identify which lineage before anything else

A used Seal for sale could be one of three unrelated boats, so identification comes before condition. Most are part of a British lifting-keel lineage that began with John Baker's Seal 22 and continued for decades after Bill Parker took over the line and renamed later models Parker. A smaller number are the Dutch-designed Seal 36, also known as the Zeehond, a flush-deck cruiser built to order in steel, wood, or aluminum. Any boat billed as a Seal 37 carries the least documented pedigree of the three, credited in catalog records to designer William Garden without much surviving verification — treat that history with caution rather than as established fact.

Which era to target

Within the lifting-keel lineage, construction changed hands partway through: Baker's original Seal-banner boats carried their ballast inside the hull, while the models Bill Parker introduced after taking over — the Parker 27, 275, 285, 21, 235, 31, and 325 — progressively moved that ballast down into the keel itself, a meaningful difference worth asking about on any individual hull. Production of the combined lineage ran across roughly four decades, and the last hull off the line, the Parker 335, dates to 2009 — a useful outer boundary for how recent a boat in this family can be.

Buyers set on the well-documented lifting-keel story are better served working from the Baker/Parker ownership split above than from a model number alone, since the underlying design logic carries across both eras. A Seal 36 is a different boat entirely — a Dutch-designed cruiser rather than part of the lift-keel progression — and worth evaluating on its own terms, including which of its three build materials a given hull used.
