Buying a used Schöchl: the same yard as Sunbeam, under a different name on the paperwork

A boat listed as a "Schöchl" is not a separate brand from Sunbeam — it's the same Mattsee, Austria family shipyard, badged by its builder name rather than its export brand. That matters for a search as much as for pedigree: widening a search to Sunbeam-badged listings turns up the same yard's product, often with more of it to compare, since Sunbeam is the name the yard adopted specifically because growing exports needed "a brand name."

Which era to target

Four design eras bound a Schöchl-badged search. Before the Sunbeam name existed, the yard credited its own in-house team rather than an outside naval architect — the 1956-1968 Mirabell is one example. The Sunbeam brand's founding era runs longest: Dutch designer E. G. van de Stadt's Sunbeam 22 stayed in production from 1964 to 2005. Overlapping that stretch, in the early 1970s, the Miglitsch-designed Gitana, Aquila, and Manta 19 formed a shorter-lived side line. More recent design partnerships are worth confirming against a given hull's paperwork rather than assumption: the yard's credited work with J&J Design starts in 1993, and with Nissen Yachtdesign in 2000, running through 2020 by the yard's own records.

Because "Schöchl" and "Sunbeam" describe the same builder, a search limited to one name alone misses boats sold under the other. The Manta 19, built by the yard from 1973 to 1989 and separately licensed for a 200-boat run built in Britain by Blakes Marine, is its own distinct line best researched on its own page rather than folded into either builder name here. For everything else — the van de Stadt-era Sunbeam 22 through the J&J and Nissen-designed later models — the full model directory on this page is the place to compare across the range by designer era and size.
