Buying a used Scandinavia: what the name doesn't tell you

A Scandinavia-badged sailboat is not a Scandinavian boat. Scandinavia Yacht is a Polish shipyard, founded in Skarżysko-Kamienna by Michał Kiersnowski, and the brand name is a marketing choice rather than a statement of origin — the first thing worth establishing about any listing carrying it. Beyond that, this is a small-volume European builder: buying used means weighing the individual boat and its documented history more than leaning on brand reputation, since the range is compact and any one hull's record is what a low-production yard can typically offer.

Which era to target

The clearest boundary in the lineup is the replacement of the original Scandinavia 26 with an improved Scandinavia 27 — a real generation change, not a rename, so a 26 and a 27 should be treated as different boats even though they share a size class. Model naming needs similar care lower in the range: the boat sold as the Scandinavia 650 Cruiser is built from designer Jerzy Pieśniewski's pre-existing "Skippi 650" hull, and the same boat can appear in listings under either name — a Skippi 650 badge doesn't mean a different builder or a lesser boat. CE certification is a useful filter at the top of the range: only the 35 carries the category A rating the builder points to for ocean-capable use, and the 27 and 30 aren't marketed to that same standard — worth confirming against the specific boat rather than assuming it across the range.

Navigating the lineup

Two useful support facts don't show up on a spec sheet. First, a small-volume European builder rarely tells you where its parts come from, but Scandinavia does: Vetus, Volvo Penta, Mazuria, Aura-Giers, Sail Service, Parker Poland and Skaut are all named as component suppliers, a head start for anyone trying to track down a replacement part later. Second, the 27 and 30 are easy to tell apart against a listing's photos: the 30's slim silhouette and large windows stand next to a bigger, wider-hulled 27 riding higher-sided with a deep, dry cockpit on a fibreglass hull and fin keel — and the 27 also carries the vertical-bow stability margin the builder points to in its own specifications. Neither model's own page from the builder names a designer, so treat any listing that attaches a designer credit to either one with caution.
