Buying a used Piewiet: a small yard's boat with a thin paper trail

Buying a used Piewiet means buying a boat from a single small Dutch yard, Van der Rest Nautic of Kats, with almost no independent record beyond the builder's own account and a trademark-infringement judgment. There is no body of magazine reviews to check a boat against, which shifts the weight onto the individual boat's condition and paperwork rather than brand reputation.

Which era to target

The clearest era marker is the name itself. Van der Rest designed and built the line as the Kievit in the late 1960s and early 1970s, then renamed it Piewiet in 1977 — a boat sold under one name predates the other. A separate, later Kievit 22 also exists: it was a modernized version brought to market at the 2006 HISWA boat show by Harpol c.s., a different company, using an image a Dutch court later weighed against Van der Rest's registered lapwing mark and found close enough to leave the same overall impression on an average buyer. A buyer should not mistake that boat, or its builder, for Van der Rest's own line.

What to inspect across the range

Hull material is documented for at least one model: the 930's hull is fibreglass, matching the polyester construction Van der Rest Nautic says it built and repaired across its own history. Because Van der Rest also built Pion one-design hulls from the same mould as several other Dutch yards, and because the unrelated Kievit 22 used a lapwing-style mark of its own, it is worth confirming a boat's actual builder and model identity against its paperwork rather than assuming from name or mark alone.
