Buying a used Phantom: confirm the lineage first

A "Phantom" listing carries almost no information by itself -- at least five unrelated builders have put the name on boats as different as a single-handed racing dinghy, a foiling catamaran, and a small cruising monohull. Condition and price tell you nothing about which one you're looking at; the model designation, hull type, and builder have to do that work before anything else about the boat matters. Confirm the category -- dinghy, foiling multihull, recreational catamaran, or monohull cruiser -- before comparing a listing to anything else.

Which era to target

The British one-design dinghy has been built by different hands across different materials since 1971: an older polyester hull from the class's original builder is a different ownership proposition than a newer all-epoxy boat from Ovington Boats or an epoxy/wood combination from James Jarvey Boats, especially since carbon spars and self-draining cockpits only entered the class later in its history. The French foiling catamaran splits by manufacturing era rather than material: boats built before 2017 came from Thailand's Cobra shipyard, while Elite and Essentiel-series boats have come from McConaghy's Zhuhai, China facility since a January 2017 manufacturing partnership. The rarer German Genzel-built cruising boat traces to the 1970s, and the Australian Shein-designed monohull to 1985-1997 -- worth confirming against the specific hull, since neither lineage carries much documentation beyond a build date.

Because these lineages don't share so much as a construction philosophy, sort the full model directory on this page by builder and boat type rather than length or year -- a British dinghy racer, a French performance multihull, an Italian beach catamaran, and a rare German or Australian monohull cruiser each demand entirely different buying criteria. Match a listing's model designation to its builder before weighing anything else about the boat.
