Buying a used Parker: confirm which Parker you're looking at before anything else

Because three unrelated builders have put the name "Parker" on a sailboat, the first task in evaluating a used listing isn't condition — it's identification. A Parker 21, 27, 275, 31, 325, or 335 traces back to Bill Parker's Lincolnshire lift-keel yard, built and supported out of England. A Dawson 26 or Dawson Poacher is an unrelated Massachusetts-built boat with no ties to that yard at all. And a Javelin 30 isn't a Parker-built boat in any sense — it came out of Marine Construction (Marcon) in Southampton and only carries the name through its designer. Buyers who skip this step risk chasing parts, history, or a design pedigree that belongs to the wrong boat entirely.

Which era to target

Within the genuine Lincolnshire-built range, two design lineages run in parallel, and knowing which one a listing belongs to matters more than the model number alone. The smaller Ron Holland line runs from the Super Seal 26 through the Parker 27 to the 1990-redesigned Parker 275, plus the separate Holland-designed Parker 21 trailer-sailer. The larger Tony Castro line runs from the Parker 31 into the Parker 325, later sold as the 335 for its last eleven hulls — the same boat under two names, not a later, distinct generation. The yard's 2009 liquidation is the other era boundary worth knowing: production of the wider cruising lineup ended there, while the Squib licence alone carried on afterward under Bruce Parker Sailboats.

What to inspect across the range

The lift-keel mechanism that defines the range is also its main maintenance point. On the Parker 275, Yachting Monthly found raising the keel meant winding a handle through 180 turns by hand, taking three to four minutes — worth testing in person rather than taking on faith. On the Parker 325, the same publication's surveyor-sourced advice flagged corrosion to the keel's hydraulic ram as common enough to warrant checking the anodes regularly, plus keel fastenings to the lead keel known to shear off, and through-bolted chain plates prone to water ingress and elevated moisture readings in the surrounding laminate. All three are worth a hands-on check regardless of which model is in front of you.

Size and lineage both help narrow a search: the Holland line tops out around 27 to 28 feet, while the Castro line runs to roughly 32 to 33 feet, and the Squib sits apart entirely as a one-design racing dayboat rather than a cruiser. Buyers set on the genuine Lincolnshire-built boats are better served working from that lineage split than from model numbers alone, then comparing individual listings against the full model directory on this page.
