Buying a used Odin: a distributor's boat, not a production builder's

A used Odin is not a used boat from a production builder in the ordinary sense. The company behind it, Odin Yachten GmbH Lamprecht, made its living importing, distributing, and servicing yachts rather than manufacturing them, and the one model it put its name on, the Odin 820, had its hull moulded in Poland and its fit-out finished in Germany before final assembly at the family's base in Franconia. That build chain matters more than usual here because the company itself no longer exists: the German commercial register lists Odin Yachten GmbH Lamprecht as dissolved, wound up and struck from the register after entering liquidation. Buying used means buying without a factory to call, a dealer network, or an ongoing parts supply behind the name — the boat has to stand entirely on its own condition and history.

What to inspect across the range

The 820's water ballast system is central to how the boat sails and should be central to how it's inspected: it uses open water ballast, taken on and released to trim the boat, with the tank draining while under way as part of normal operation — a buyer should confirm the tank, valves, and drain path are sound rather than assuming a fixed-keel boat's maintenance pattern applies. A Canadian Boating tester who put an 820 through its paces found good mechanics and attention to detail throughout, along with some cavitation on tight turns that the tester did not consider a concern — worth checking for yourself on a sea trial rather than assuming it away. Because the hull was moulded in Poland and only fitted out and assembled in Germany, build records and any paperwork trail may span both countries, which is worth asking about directly rather than assuming a single-yard build history.

Navigating the lineup

Because the 820 carried a second name in Europe, Imexus 27, and the maker announced that all future models would be branded Imexus rather than Odin, a search for "Odin" alone can miss the same boat listed under its other name — check both when shopping. The family also built at least one other length, roughly a metre shorter than the 820, and later added a model called the Odin nova, so a boat that resembles the 820 but doesn't match its dimensions may be one of these under a different badge rather than a misdescribed 820.
