Buying a used Nordborg: one family's narrow-hulled formula, not a factory product

A used Nordborg is the output of a small, family-run yard, not a large manufacturer's factory line: three generations of the same Danish family — founder Jakob Jensen, his son Holger Bladt Jensen, and Holger's son Johannes in turn — have run Nordborg Bådebyggeri from the same workshop on the island of Als since 1936. That matters to a buyer because the boats reflect one family's consistent read on what a cruising sailboat should be, rather than a corporate model line refreshed by committee: narrow hulls and low freeboard, kept, in Holger's own words about the boat he designed, "not too tall" so they stay easy to sail.

Which era to target

The earlier lineup — the 26, 30, 33, and 37 — established the yard's narrow, low-freeboard formula in hand-laid fiberglass, with interior fit-out finished in Khaya mahogany at the yard. The later boats, including the 34, 40, and the well-documented 42, trace their lines directly back to that earlier work rather than departing from it. The 42 stands out as the yard's best-reviewed boat: both Denmark's Minbåd.dk and Germany's YACHT tested it, and YACHT called it a very well-crafted touring yacht with a classic layout and fine woodwork below deck. Its hull and superstructure use fiberglass with a balsa core, a departure from the solid, hand-laid construction used elsewhere in the range.

Every Nordborg carries the same narrow, low-freeboard character across sizes, from the 26 up through the 42, so era and condition matter more than size alone when narrowing a search. The line also drew a following outside Denmark — one test of the 42 found the waters off Dyvig thick with Nordborg boats, many under German ownership, a useful sign of how far the yard's small output has traveled. The full model directory on this page breaks out the range by length and year.
