Buying a used Newbridge: know whose design you're getting

Buying a used Newbridge means buying into a small English yard that built other designers' boats more often than its own. The Corribee, its defining product, was commissioned from Robert Tucker by the boat's original distributor, not drawn up in-house - so what you're really assessing isn't a single house style, it's which specific hull and mark you're getting: the wood-era-derived pocket cruiser converted to GRP production, or the purpose-built junk-rig Coromandel built on that same hull.

Which era to target

The earliest GRP Corribees carry a quirk from the original hull plug: Mk I (roughly 150 built) and Mk II boats sit about an inch narrower to starboard than to port. Newbridge fixed this with a new plug for the Mk III, which is also the roomier boat below decks - two additional inches of headroom came with the correction. Buyers who want a corrected hull and more interior space should look to the Mk III; earlier marks trade that for being closer to the original design. The 1982 Coromandel isn't a further hull generation - it rides the same Corribee hull below the waterline - so shop it on topside condition and junk-rig gear rather than mark number.

Navigating the lineup

Beyond the Corribee and Coromandel, Newbridge's later catalog included Bill Dixon-designed trailer-sailers - the Navigator and the larger Venturer 22 - and the wheelhouse-equipped Pioneer 26, alongside the Spinner 28 and the earlier Topaz. Both the Venturer 22 and Pioneer 26 were built in more than one keel configuration - twin bilge keels most commonly, with fin-keel and lifting-keel or centreboard versions also produced - so confirm keel type rather than assume it from the model name alone; it bears directly on draft and trailering. Buyers set on the Tucker-designed pocket cruiser or its junk-rig sibling should focus their search there; buyers open to Newbridge's broader, later output can work outward from the full model directory on this page.
