Buying a used Mystic: confirm which builder before anything else
A "Mystic" listing on its own says almost nothing about the boat behind it: at least three unrelated builders on three continents have used the name independently, plus a fourth documented only in catalog records, and no history, construction, or country of origin carries over between them. Before comparing a used Mystic to anything else, confirm which of these -- a Connecticut catboat, a British custom cruiser, or an Argentine cruiser-racer -- the listing is actually describing.
Which era to target
The Connecticut line has the clearest window: Peter Legnos's Groton, Connecticut yard, LBI, designed, manufactured, and marketed its sailboats -- among them the fiberglass Mystic Catboat 20 -- into the mid-1980s, moving out of boatbuilding in 1986; the Catboat 20 itself is documented in production as late as 1987. The British Mystic 55 and Mystic 60 came from Cygnus Marine's Bluewater Projects division, which built them under contract for Alan Morgan Yachting; Cygnus later sold that division to Royston, and Cygnus Marine itself has since stopped operating, so a used 55 or 60 is now an orphaned design with no factory behind it, whatever the age of the individual hull. The Argentine line is the most precisely dated: Javier Soto Acebal's Mystic 235 design dates to 1996 and his Mystic 200 to 1999, both built by Oceantech and sold there under the Malbec name as well.

A boat badged Mystic Cat, Mystic 30, Ali Cat, or River Cat traces to the Legnos yard; a 55 or 60 traces to the Cygnus Marine/Alan Morgan Yachting partnership; and a 235 or 200 traces to Soto Acebal and Oceantech in Argentina, where it may also turn up listed under the Malbec name. Confirm the builder, and where relevant check for a Malbec cross-listing, before assuming a used Mystic is unique to that name.
