Buying a used Meta: a custom-built history, not a production run
Most of Meta's history is a story of one-off and small-series custom builds rather than an assembly line — the yard did not begin work on its first production model, the Meta 36, until 2019. That changes the used-boat calculus: a Meta hull from any earlier year is closer to a bespoke commission than a catalog boat, which raises the premium on documented provenance and build history over model-name shopping alone. It also means a used Meta's condition says as much about that specific hull's individual construction and care as about which model or era it came from.
Which era to target
The lineup splits along the yard's own 1977 construction pivot. Pre-1977 boats — descendants of a steel-era output that, by the builder's own count, topped a hundred hulls across the Joshua and Damien II lines alone — carry the maintenance realities of welded steel construction and the historic pedigree of the Bernard Moitessier connection. From 1977 on, Meta built exclusively in Strongall, its patented prestressed-aluminum method, which eventually accounted for the bulk of the yard's three-hundred-plus lifetime output; boats from this era, including the Dalu 47 (built 1980-1984) and the later JPB line, share that aluminum construction. A further dividing line falls at 2020, when incoming owner Philippe Brabetz added TurboKeels, a twin-keel ballast-transfer system he had patented himself, to the range — worth asking about specifically, since it is not a feature of earlier Strongall-era hulls.
Navigating the lineup
The range runs from the compact Minitroll 27 up through mid-size Dalu- and Delu-class boats to the long-distance JPB 52, with the one-off Fleur Australe — an expedition ketch built to Philippe Poupon's own design — and the Ecotroll 39 sitting apart as limited-run projects developed with outside naval architects. Because nearly the entire range predates Meta's 2019 shift to production building, buyers comparing hulls of similar size should expect real differences between individual boats even within the same nominal model — a reason to lean on the full model directory on this page alongside direct research into each hull's specific build history.
