What varies from boat to boat is less the yard's philosophy than an individual hull's build era and upkeep, which is where a buyer's diligence should go.

Which era to target

Marshall Marine dates a handful of production changes precisely enough to use them as inspection anchors. Hulls built in the company's first decade predate the 1972 shift to chopper-gun lamination and the later move to all-isophthalic gelcoat and resins with closed-cell foam in place of wooden battens — worth asking a seller about on any boat from that early window. The Marshall 22 carries two further, better-documented markers: an external stuffing box gave way to an internal one sometime in the mid-1970s, and a 1983 change swapped the original glassed-plywood cockpit sole and stanchion-mounted seats for a molded fiberglass cockpit, a structural upgrade worth confirming on any 22 under consideration. The Sakonnet 23 sits outside all of this: Marshall only added it to the range in 2010, and it's built with one-piece molded-fiberglass hull, deck and cockpit-liner construction unrelated to the catboats' hand-laid method, so none of the catboat era markers apply to it.
