Buying a used Laguna: know which name you're looking at

Buying a used Laguna means buying from a single Anaheim, California yard whose boats crossed a naming line partway through its history: everything sold before 1980 wears the Windrose badge, everything after wears Laguna, on the same production run. Every one of these boats -- whichever name is on the transom -- came from one designer, W. Shad Turner, so a Windrose listing is not a lesser or unrelated find next to a Laguna one. Treat the name split as bookkeeping, not a design break, and shop across both badges rather than searching "Laguna" alone.

Which era to target

A hull dated anywhere from the 1973 founding through 1986 traces to founder Bill Downing's original ownership, spanning both the Windrose years and the post-1980 Laguna years -- the most consistent stretch to shop. A change of hands followed in 1986, and the buyer after that lasted barely a year before selling again in 1987; boats from that brief window sit at the tail end of the Laguna Yachts name itself. After 1987 the business is a different story altogether: it moved to Chanute, Kansas, took the name Capital Yachts, and kept only one holdover design in production, the old Laguna 26 renamed Classic 26, before shutting down in 1995. A boat found under that Kansas-era branding is best treated as its own category rather than a later Laguna.

Across its run the lineup spanned roughly 16 to 33 feet, concentrated mostly in the years between 1980 and 1987, from small trailerable designs up through mid-sized cruisers built in far smaller numbers. Buyers after an early, simple trailer-sailer should look to the smaller end of that range; buyers after a larger cruiser should look to the later, bigger models -- the full model directory on this page breaks out the individual listings.
