Buying a used Koopmans: identify the yard and material before the brand
A "Koopmans" listing carries a design credit, not a factory guarantee. D. Koopmans Jachtontwerpers has never built a boat itself; the office's drawings were turned into hulls by whichever yard held the commission, and those yards worked in different materials in different decades. Two boats both labeled "Koopmans" can come from entirely different construction traditions, so the first question for a buyer isn't which Koopmans design this is, but which yard actually built it, in what material, and whether the build was a production run or a one-off custom job.
Which era to target
Koopmans's catalog splits roughly into two building traditions, and each calls for different scrutiny. The earlier one runs through production fiberglass: the Victoire 22, the boat the design office itself treats as the start of its business history, saw roughly two thousand built starting in the 1960s, and the Koopmans 36 in this catalog, laid up in 1987, comes out of that same fiberglass tradition, where age-related wear is a bigger question than hull-to-hull inconsistency. The later tradition is custom metalwork: the Koopmans 39, a steel design from 1995, and the boats Hutting Yachts built to Koopmans Sr.'s designs both belong to a bespoke, one-off building culture rather than a production line, so build quality rode on the individual yard and even the individual boat rather than a standardized process. A metal hull from that tradition is worth a survey from someone experienced specifically with steel or aluminum construction, not a generalist.

Not every boat built under a Koopmans-associated name is actually a Koopmans design: the Hutting 52, for instance, came from Hoek Design rather than Koopmans, even though it shares a builder and a model-number style with the Koopmans-designed Hutting 40, 45, and 50.
