Buying a used Italia: a small racing yard, not a mass builder

A used Italia carries a different risk profile than a boat from a mass builder. The yard grew out of a single hull built to its founder's own racing brief rather than a market study, and the sailors who ran the company kept campaigning production boats straight off the line at a competitive level. That background means condition and history carry more weight than the badge does: a well-kept hull that was sailed by people who knew what they were doing is a very different used boat than the same model campaigned hard and neglected afterward. Which line a hull belongs to, how it was built, and when it was built matter more than the model number by itself.

Which era to target

The clearest dividing line in the range falls around 2017, when new ownership joined the business and the yard began a five-year development program that ran through 2020; boats from that stretch, including the Italia 11.98 (2019) and Italia 14.98 (2020), came out of a better-capitalized yard than the early hulls that preceded it. A second dividing line falls at 2022, when the yard brought every build phase under one roof at its Castelvecchio site - a boat from that generation should reflect tighter in-house oversight than one built earlier, when work was still split across the original Chioggia base and a second facility opened around 2016 in San Giorgio di Nogaro. Construction method is also worth tying to build year: reviewers who tested the 9.98 not long after its 2014 launch described its hull and deck as laminated wet, by hand, while a later test of the 15.98 found the yard using vacuum infusion instead - a buyer comparing an early hull against a later one should expect that shift in build technique, not read it as a defect on the older boat.

What to inspect across the range

A few issues recur often enough across independent tests to be worth checking on any used Italia, regardless of model. Yachting World's test of the 15.98 flagged cockpit coamings that sit too low, a winch layout that can make sheet-handling harder than it should be, and cockpit benches the tester considered inadequate for protection at sea; the same publication's test of the 11.98 separately noted non-skid decking so aggressive it left the tester with mixed feelings. YACHT's test of the 9.98 found the engine poorly soundproofed and the berths, especially the aft one, short and narrow. None of these are structural complaints, but each recurs in an independent test, so they're worth confirming in person before buying.

Within that shared racing pedigree, the lineup splits mainly along two lines and a wide size range. Fuoriserie, the yard's sport race cruiser line, comes with support from Squadra Corse, the in-house team Italia fields to help owners set their boats up for racing; Bellissima is pitched as the luxury performance bluewater cruiser line for buyers who want the same hull science without racing as the goal. Size runs from roughly 34 feet at the 9.98 up past 55 feet at the 15.98 and 16.98, so it's worth narrowing by size and line before comparing individual boats on the full model directory on this page.
