Buying a used Hinterhoeller: two very different boats under one name

A used Hinterhoeller isn't one kind of purchase — it's at least two. George Hinterhoeller's name covers both the Shark 24, a one-design racer produced in the thousands across Canada and licensed European yards, and the later Niagara cruising sloops that came out of the company he founded in 1977. Both trace back to the same builder and the same construction habits, but they serve different sailors, and a buyer should be clear about which boat — and which era of the yard — they are actually shopping for before comparing listings by name alone. The yard itself shut down in November 1995, so parts support and community knowledge now hinge on the specific model far more than on the Hinterhoeller name stamped on the transom.

Which era to target

The earliest Sharks were plywood before the yard settled into fiberglass partway through the run — worth confirming directly on any early-hull Shark rather than assuming construction from a listing description, since that generation is rarer and surveys differently. Cruising buyers are effectively choosing a designer as much as a decade: Frers drew the Niagara 31, a boat Hinterhoeller shaped in part by listing what he wanted improved on his own C&C 30, while Ellis drew the larger Niagara 35 after Hinterhoeller had been won over by Ellis's earlier Aurora 40. Knowing which designer's boat is in front of you matters more here than counting years, since both models came out of the young company within a year of each other.

What to inspect across the range

On the Niagara 35, reviewers have flagged a semicored hull worth monitoring over time, along with balsa decking that should be checked for water saturation around fittings on older boats — a routine survey item on any Niagara this age. Many older Niagara 35s have also been retrofitted with an inner forestay, which should be confirmed as properly reinforced rather than simply bolted on; the same reviews note the model isn't known for blister problems, which is one point in its favor. The Niagara 31 was built to a similar cored-fiberglass recipe, so the same checks are worth applying there even though less has been written specifically about its long-term issues.
