Buying a used Halmatic: you're buying a moulder's output, not one house's design

A "Halmatic" badge on a brokerage listing can mean two different things, and knowing which one you're looking at matters more than the name itself. On earlier Nicholson 32 marks, Halmatic was the moulder and finisher of a Camper & Nicholson design that Camper & Nicholson itself sold; from the mid-1970s onward, Halmatic became the seller too, and its own later designs — the 8.80 and the Halmatic 30 among them — carry no outside design pedigree at all beyond Halmatic's own hull-moulding heritage. Buying used Halmatic, in other words, means weighing construction quality and mark-specific detail more than a single consistent brand identity, since the badge covers a genuine mix of who conceived, built, and sold each boat.

Which era to target

Nicholson 32 buyers should treat 1972 and 1976 as the range's two hinge points. The Mark X, from 1972, is the first version substantially different from the original: three inches more freeboard, a hull stretched to 33 feet, and a re-profiled deck that opened up cockpit space. The Mark XI, from 1977, is a different proposition again: it followed Halmatic's takeover of the selling rights, arrived at a simplified, cheaper-to-build specification, and swapped the earlier joinery-heavy interior for a GRP accommodation module and restyled galley. Earlier marks, from the pre-production Mark I of 1963 through the mid-1960s boats finished at Field Aircraft Services and later Halmatic's own Havant works, offer a more traditional layout but come from tooling and fit-out methods the company was still refining at the time.

What to inspect across the range

Osmosis is the issue to budget for, and it isn't confined to one model. Yachting Monthly's finding that the condition is common across the Nicholson 32 fleet lines up with what surveyor Nick Vass sees elsewhere in Halmatic's output — he reports the same blistering on the builder's Nelson motor-cruiser and pilot-boat range, pointing to something in the laminate rather than a single design's fault. Surveyors disagree on why: one account ties it to Halmatic's pursuit of Lloyds A1 Scantling Certification, which compromised the resin mix, while Ben Sutcliffe-Davies argues Halmatic's use of clear resin should have protected the laminate better than the pigmented resin blamed on other builders' hulls. Whichever theory holds, put a moisture meter on any Halmatic-built hull before buying, Nicholson 32 or otherwise.

The range splits by size and pedigree rather than by era alone: the Nicholson 32 and the similarly sized 1960 Daring sit at the top of Halmatic's length band, while the 8.80 and the Halmatic 30 are smaller, simpler cruisers built entirely under Halmatic's own name with no outside design partner. Buyers chasing the Nicholson 32's ocean-going pedigree and eleven marks of refinement should expect to weigh mark-specific detail closely; buyers open to a plainer long-keel cruiser have more straightforward options in the smaller boats.
