Buying a used Gulet: a category, not a brand
A used "Gulet" listing describes a category of traditional Turkish wooden boat, not a single manufacturer's product. What actually varies from one listing to the next is the individual yard that built the boat -- often unrecorded in the listing itself -- the build year and construction era, the condition of a solid-wood hull, and how hard the boat has worked in charter service. Because the label describes a hull and rig type rather than a manufacturer, two boats sold under the same name can differ as much as two boats from unrelated builders would. That makes a wooden-boat survey, not brand reputation, the real basis for a purchase decision, and it makes the boat's actual history -- who built it, when, and how it has been used -- more informative than the word "gulet" on its own.
Which era to target
Era matters because the type's own profile changed over time. A boat may still carry the earlier, pointier stern that one founding Bodrum yard's own history places in use into 1986; listings from after that point more often show the rounded profile now associated with the type, a shift that landed well after Ağan's 1970s push to turn working fishing and sponge boats into recreational cruisers. A square-sterned listing, in either era, is more likely an ayna kıç -- a related but separate hull form -- than a round-sterned gulet proper. Across eras, the traditional build is solid, indigenous wood: larch and Pinus brutia. Confirm species and plank condition rather than assume them, since both drive survey scope and repair cost. Modern Bodrum-built gulets run up to roughly forty meters, so era and size widen together toward the top of the range.
Navigating the lineup
Because the builder behind a given boat is frequently unrecorded, size and construction era are more useful starting points than any listed model name. Orient first by size band and build era, treat a documented builder as a bonus data point rather than a requirement, and only then compare individual listings on the full model directory on this page. Two gulets of similar length built decades apart, or by different yards, are not interchangeable simply because they share a category name.
