Buying a used Golden: confirm which boat it is first

A used "Golden" listing is not one category of boat — it could be any of at least four unrelated designs built on four different continents, sharing nothing but a name a catalog clipped down to its opening word. It could be a Hong Kong-built cruiser conceived to rival Nautor Swan, a Northern California daysailer sold under two or three badges, an Italian production boat named in tribute to a solo long-distance sailor, or a small Irish-built design from Cork. Before weighing condition, size, or era, a buyer needs to establish which of these the listing in front of them actually is.

Which era to target

Era boundaries run by thread, not by the make as a whole. The Golden Wave line was built by Cheoy Lee Shipyards of Hong Kong under its separate Golden Wave Shipyards name, with each hull size — the 38, 42, and 48 — the work of a different naval architect, so distinctions within that line track hull size and designer rather than a single production run. The Golden Gate 30 belongs to a Northern California-built run from the late 1970s into the early 1980s, some hulls built from kits, sold interchangeably as the Farallone 29 and the Bodega Bay 29 alongside its own name — worth checking against a specific hull's paperwork. The Golden Lion's production span at the Progressive Yachts yard in Desenzano del Garda ran from 1976 to 1985; a buyer should take care not to confuse that production run with the earlier, unrelated boat Carozzo built with his own hands aboard a Liberty ship and used for a solo Pacific crossing in 1965, more than a decade before the production line began and never itself a market design. The Golden Shamrock's run began with a 1974 prototype and moved into fiberglass production the following spring.

Because these threads share no builder, designer, or market segment, there is no single "Golden buyer" — there are several buyers shopping several different boats that happen to answer to the same catalog name. The full model directory on this page separates them out; matching a specific hull to its correct thread, rather than assuming any family resemblance across the name, is the real work of shopping this make.
