Buying a used Diva: one yard's design hand across three and a half decades

A used Diva is a single, continuous Swedish design lineage rather than a lone model line — Diva and its sister line, Campus, both came out of Fabola AB's yard and, for the most part, one designer's hand across a run that stretched from 1982 to 2017. That continuity is a point in the brand's favor, but a 35-year span also means the boats built under it were assembled very differently depending on when they left the yard, so era matters at least as much as length or layout when sizing up a listing.

Which era to target

The earliest Divas date to Fabola's home-completion years: the original 1982 Diva 39, hand-built inside Fabola's own Stockholm premises, was also offered as a boat owners could finish themselves, which is why hull-to-hull quality on that model varies more than the spec sheet suggests. At the other end of the range sits the 2017 Diva 34 SC, engineered on a different footing altogether — a sandwich hull infused under vacuum with foam coring and vinyl ester resin, with the mast base and floor structure bonded into the hull in one integrated shot rather than fitted afterward. A buyer chasing the most consistent, factory-controlled build should look toward that later end; someone comfortable vetting an individual hull's finish and repair history can work further back.

What to inspect across the range

Because the earliest Divas — the 39 above all — were sometimes finished by their owners rather than the factory, a survey is worth weighting toward workmanship, not just equipment: yachtdatabase's review of the model flags finish quality as something that swings from boat to boat depending on who completed it, so provenance and build records matter more here than on a factory-finished hull.
